stratum lucidum.
The stratum lucidum is a layer of skin found on the palms and soles. It isn't found on other parts of the body.
The stratum lucidum, which is present in the thick skin of the palms and soles, is absent in thin skin
Thick skin ( contains five layers: startum basala, spinosum, granulosum, lucidum and corneum)It has prominent stratum corneum and well- developed stratum granulosum. In addition ,it has additional epidermal layer which is named as stratum lucidum. On the top of this ,thick layer lacks integumentary appendages: hair follicles, sebaceous glands and arrector pili muscles. Generally, thick skin is located to those aeas subjected to wear and tear and mainly on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet. Thin skin ( contains only four layers: startum basala, spinosum, granulosum, and corneum)It has less prominent stratum corneum than thick skin and less developed stratum granulosum. But, it is without clear epidermal layer, stratum lucidum. Unlike the thick skin, thin skin has hair follicles, sebaceous glands and arrector pili muscles . Such type of skin is dominant and lines most of the body surface. stratum lucidum
Stratum lucidum (in thick skin) is a well defined epidermal layer found under the corneum region of the skin of the palms and soles. Main function of this stratum is to help the skin handle friction and also waterproof it. It is a thin transitional layer of epidermis found between the 'horny' and 'granular' layers.
There are a few differences actually. Firstly, the skin on your palms (includes palm-side of entire hand) and the bottom of your feet is thick skin, whereas the rest of your body is covered in thin skin (with your eyelids being the thinnest). Thick skin has a fifth layer in the epidermal stratum, the stratum lucidum, that lies above the stratum granulosome and is not found in thin skin. Also, since the fingertips are highly receptive to light touch, they are one of the few places that have Meissner's corpuscles. Meissner's corpuscles are the most sensitive (to touch) nerve endings in the skin. They can also be found in the lips, palms, soles of your feet and tongue.
Eledin found in the stratum lucidum layer will eventually form keratin, a tough, protective protein that helps waterproof the skin and hair. This process occurs as the keratinocytes move through the skin layers towards the surface and mature.
This is one of layer in epidermis of the skin. Lucidum means transparent. You do not have typical nuclei to be seen in this layer. They have got disintegrated for lack of blood supply, probably.
The stratum lucidum is only found in the palms, fingertips, and soles.
Used in detecting pressure in fingertips, palms, soles of the feet, and other hairless skin regions.
The stratum lucidum is absent from most epidermis, except for in areas with thick skin, such as the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The stratum lucidum is a clear layer of dead skin cells found between the stratum granulosum and stratum corneum.
The stratum lucidum is the clear layer of the skin. It is found only in the thick skin of the palms and soles.
The head and torso lack the stratum lucidum epidermal layer found in areas with thick skin, such as the palms and soles. Instead, the head and torso have thinner skin with fewer epidermal layers.
