They tried their best to quarantine the infected, but many people escaped the confinement. They also used vinegar as a disinfectant, and strong smelling incense and cloves because they thought the disease spread through the air. In The Plague, Albert Camus writes about a fictional outbreak in Northern Africa in the early part of the 20th Century. Once again, quarantine was the answer while they waited for the vaccine to be shipped in. They also killed all small animals that might carry fleas (which carry the disease) and imposed curfews.
