The treatment for an electrical burn follows the general rule when treating any burn. WARNING: The most important thing when treating an electrical burn is to ensure that the electricity source that caused the injury in the first place is switched off. Do this by calling you National Emergency Number and stating your location. Only when the electrical source is turned off, do you approach and offer your help. Remove any constricting clothing and jewellery so that should swelling occur, they will not constrict circulation. Cool the burn by immersing it in cold, running water for at least 15 minutes. Always check the limbs for an "exit" wound where the current would have gone to ground. Call for urgent medical help and have the patient dispatched to hospital without delay.
For an electrical burn, only put on dry, sterile bandages. Do not remove any clothing if it is stuck to the burn.
