Not too surprisingly, the states with the most smokers per capita are the major tobacco-producing states. Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee lead the list. However, it should be noted that even in Kentucky 72.5% of the population does not smoke. The lowest numbers occur in the US Virgin Islands, where less than 10% of the population smokes.

Generally-speaking, states with large rural populations that tend to be less-educated exceed the urban states in percentage of smokers. This could also be partly due to the restrictions on smoking in urban settings creating social circumstances that make it more desirable to quit.
