England was very unsanitary and was infested with insects, rats and all kinds of pests, because: * They didn't bathe regularly, (they felt they were growing a protective layer of skin). If they did bathe, the entire family bathed (one after the other) in the same tub of water. * They dumped dead bodies, animal and human wastes out in the street, * They ate spoiled and rotten food, * Animals (sheep, pigs, etc.) slept in the house with the family, * They killed all of the cats, under the mistaken impression that cats were either the helpers of witches or witches that had change into other forms. These cats could have cut down on the rats that infested England; these rats and other pests carried the fleas that brought the Plague to England and much of Europe.
