People with AS have a difficult time socializing. They have a hard time reading faces. It's tough for them to recognize and interpret the subtle tones we use with language. AS folks are usually VERY literal, thus common collequialisms confuse them, such as saying, "Hey! What's up?" when you greet someone. They literally might look up and answer the question with, "The sky." People mistake this for sarcasm and may misinterpret the AS person as rude, etc.

Social situations have all kinds of complex issues that are extraordinarily difficult for the person with AS. This is why they appear "different" in social situations. They see the world through a different lens than someone else who does not have AS sees the world. But, it is their world as much as it is yours or mine -- so we have to respect the differences between us and make accomodations for those differences.
