There are many different types of headache. The two main kinds are:

Most people will experience the occasional Tension Headache, which is a headache caused by contraction of the muscles of the scalp and neck. A tension headache can be caused by numerous things: stress, illness, eyestrain, etc.. Tension headaches are normally not debilitating and can be treated easily with Tylenol or ibuprofen.

Migraines, unlike Tension Headaches, are a neurological disorder which causes intense head pain as well as other symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, vision changes, etc...due to a change in electrical activity in the brain. This change that kicks off a migraine can be caused by many, many different things that highly individual. One person might get a migraine due to skipping a meal, another might get one due to getting sprayed by the perfume lady at the mall.

The best way to determine what your personal triggers are is to keep a headache diary. That can include anything down to what you ate the day you had a headache, what the weather was, how much stress you were under, etc... Over time, you may see a pattern begin to emerge that can be helpful to preventing your headaches.
