It's called an Epinephrine pen.
When a person has minor Allergies, such as seasonal allergies, they would use a medicine to block the histamine like benydryl.
For more severe allergic reactions like bee stings or food allergies, you would use the epi-pen.

Epinephrine blocks the histamines that cause the severe swelling that can cause the throat to swell shut, so they can't breath, or the heart to stop.

Even if you're careful, an accident might happen. For exemple, if you're severely allergic to nuts and peanuts and you eat a chocolate bar that may contain traces of nuts or peanuts or have been in contact with nuts or peanuts and you go into anaphylaxis nobody will be able to inject the medicine in your outer thigh. They'll call 911, but it doesn't mean the ambulance will get there on time. They might get there on time and give you an injection with an auto-injector. But you might die before the ambulance get there.
