While history does not say what each lot of the love canal site was before it became a dump site we do know:
The area that the 1 mile of canal dug was to connect the Niagara river to Lake Ontario. The canal was not completed.
It became a sort of man made lake that people used to swim in.
The neighborhood around this was named Love Canal for this historic attempt.
The unfinished Canal became a dumping ground for municipal waste then chemical waste and finally covered over and sold in 1953.
William Love started to build the canal in the 1890's. The public did not notice that Hooker Chemical company was dumping harmful chemicals in the site. Hooker stopped dumping wastes in the 1950's. Hope this kind of helped, it is still continuing today(By the way). There is still hazardous waste in the site.
The pollution made the people of Love Canal sick. The government had to move the people and it became a Superfund site.
Love Canal was one, maybe the most famous one in the US.
The Love Canal community in New York experienced severe health effects from massive industrial chemical dumping. This led to high rates of cancer, birth defects, and other health issues among residents living in the area.
some became extremely ill, some died and after many protests cleanup was finalized.
