Reasons why it's called 'plastic surgery.'

  • It's a Greek word 'plastikos' meaning to mold or shape.
  • Plastic surgery dates back centuries. Ancient India skin grafts were used for reconstruction purposes. Romans repaired damaged ears of soldiers.
  • Plastic surgery was inspired by war. In the early 1800s doctor Sir Harold Gillies from New Zealand developed many plastic surgery techniques during WWI and he's considered the father of plastic surgery. Sir Gillie's cousin Archibald McIndoe pioneered in plastic surgery during WWII treating RAF air crews.
