Have never had a vet recommend Benadryl, but I do know they will recommend Gravol. If you are talking about separation anxiety, training is best. Leave the dog for very short periods (minutes) and build up his resistance to being on his own. If you don't have one, get a crate for him. This will keep him from being destructive, and he will appreciate having his own safe space once he is crate trained. (I didn't believe this for years, but it is true.)

No. I wouldn't give a dog a benadryl because it can upset the dogs stomach and make the dog through up. Anyways giving an animal a medicine made for a person can really hurt the animal because it isn't made for the animal only for a person. So don't give your dog benadryl.

Benadryl will make your dog sleepy; however, it will not reassure your dog this scary noise is not going to eat them. Making yourself available to comfort your dog, just as you would a child, through the stressful event is a better approach. Since a dog tends to have the capacity of a two year old child for the duration of its life, using similar, if not the same techniques and methods you would use for a two year old child work quite effectively for most dogs. Providing discipline, consistency and setting boundaries creates a routine both respond to and depend on.
