A good rule of thumb is that you should only take a maximum of 1000mg of acetaminophen (Tylonel) per 6 hours and up to 600 mg of ibuprofen (Advil) every 6 hours. Whether you combine these two medications should be recommended by your doctor, but it is relatively safe if you stay less than these amounts. Many doctors do prescribe ibuprofen along with codeine/APAP or hydrocodone/APAP. There are long term effects of taking too much of either, including liver or kidney issues.
