Some strains of Staph are resistant to Penicillin and Penicillin derivatives (Amoxicillin). These type of infections generally call for a Cephalosporin such as Keflex, and, a Sulfa such as Bactrim. Often though, antibiotics alone will not be enough to clear an abscess. Most often they require incision and drainage and sometimes packing in addtion to the antibiotics.
