Do you ovulate if you're on NuvaRing?

The NuvaRing is supposed to be used for three weeks, then taken out so that you WILL have a menstrual cycle. You do ovulate every month as long as you're taking the NuvaRing out for the one week, and place a new one in once that week is done. The NuvaRing, if you look at the package insert, is equipped with enough hormones to supply Birth Control for a full 30 days. If you choose to keep the ring in for four weeks, and put a brand new one in without taking a week-long break, you will not ovulate and will not have a menstrual cycle.

Having said that, it is OK to not have a menstrual cycle every single month. As long as you have 3-4 periods a year, your body will function normally and nothing bad should happen. As with many forms of birth control, there's always risk of "break-through" bleeding, which happens to many women and generally isn't reason for alarm as long as it isn't heavy and for more than a week.

The answer varies from woman to woman, and is influenced by your mentrual cycle length before you started using the Nuva Ring, but most women will ovulate between two and four weeks after the last ring.

Well you are not supposed to ovulate while on Nuvaring.... but ive been on it for about 3 years now and I am very good about taking it out and putting a new one in at the correct times and I am developing cysts on my ovary.... which my doctor says is a problem because cysts form from ovulation... therefore she believes I am ovulating... she has suggested that I shorten my OFF days from 7 to about 4 that way my body does not have enough time to register that it need to prepare an egg and ovulate.... I hope it works... cause the point of me being on Nuvaring is to prevent pregnancy.... And I cannot think of any reason why it shouldn't be working... I am doing everything right and I am nowhere near over the weight limit where the effectiveness is lessened due to weight.

Stop the Nuva Ring and have vaginal sex. It's a good idea to talk with your health care provider about folic acid supplements and other preconception counseling. Congratulations to you and your family!
