Yes many people have but it is very individual and there is no rule for how long to take suboxone. it depends on your situation. I was on it for about two years until I got my personal life back in order after destroying it from severe heroin use of ten years. You should not quit if things are totally crazy in your life. You should be in a very stable environment and should have very stable and in good standing in your personal relationships. And when you quit you should do it very very gradually. The problem usually lies in people trying to get off methadone too quickly. Tapering from methadone takes time--the suggested rate, to avoid withdrawal symptoms, is no faster than 10% of your current dose every 2 to 4 weeks. The amount you drop changes each time as you adjust the 10% to your current dose.

It is crucial to success to taper all the way down to 1mg before stepping off. People who stop at 5 or 10 mgs thinking they will be fine end up seriously ill from withdrawals for weeks, and usually relapse.

In fact, the rate of relapse for those leaving methadone treatment is 90%, even for those who do it the right way. This is due to the fact that long term opioid abuse causes changes in the brain chemistry--changes that are in many cases permanent. The rain is no longer ale to produce natural endorphins. As a result, it needs an outside source--and that is where methadone comes in. It normalizes the brain chemistry without causing a high, enabling the patient to feel normal.

Sadly, many patients feel pressured to get off treatment from family, friends--even treatment providers themselves. This is usually a serious mistake. This decision must be left up to the patient and the patient alone.
