How do antibiotics effect blood sugar levels?

I am a type 2 diabetic and when I take any of the cillin family of drugs, my blood glucose will rise 80-100 points. I normally run 110-120 in the mornings before breakfast. On Pen-VK, 800,000 units, it will be near 200-220. I take insulin 4 times daily. 20u,20u,25u and 35u long lasting (24hr type at 9pm each day). Even taking my insulin dosages as requiered, my glucose is still high. But 8-10 hrs after I quit the pen-vk it goes back to MY NORMAL. Allways check with your doctor before taking any meds. This is more so if you are a diabetic! Even though I can get meds in Mexico, I live close, I never take them without my Doctor knowing. If he says don't, then I don't. Hope this helps.

Penicillin (and most antibiotics) can be taken by diabetics. They generally suffer from bigger infection, but if penicillin is the required antibiotic for a specific infection, diabete won't affect its effectiveness.

i does know about medical science but i have a little experience.so from my past expierance i will tell u this much only that antibiotics increase blood sugar.its true.so start taking sugar free.ok thanks.please read my answer carefully. antibiotics don't increase blood sugar because people take in antibiotics as drugs that fight against germs or foreign bodies that increase the sugar level in the body.

Antibiotics can affect blood sugar levels but this is considered a secondary effect.

Prolonged use of antibiotics can cause diarrhea. This at hand minimizes the bodys absorption of what you eat and drink.

People with Diabetes are however more at risk of contracting fungal infections, possibly due to penicillin administered.

Penicillin can also give false positives on urine test results measuring sugarlevels.

You should however consult a doctor if you need antibiotic and have diabetes.

Point out your condition and he/she will probably be able to give you more information if you ask for it.

Generally no, although there are probably exceptions. The underlying illness for which antibiotics are prescribed, however, is likely to affect blood glucose.

It depends if you have type 1 or type 2. Type 2's cannot take it. A type 1 however, would be able to take it. If the type 2 was actually in disguise as a type 1 they could take it
