How do you ease withdrawal from methadone?

If the methadone user who is withdrawing is trying to quit "cold turkey" and not take any more methadone, then your form of "help" would consist of mental support, trying to encourage movement, and nutrition (as methadone detox makes one want to lay motionless, and not eat, due to severe discomfort, and irritation) as well as mentally encourage them to stay clean. Methadone withdrawals, depending on the person can last up to 5 months or so, depending on the lenght of usage, body type, and amount of normal dosages.

I have been easing off a 130 mg dose over the last 2 years and now am down to 31 mg with little to no problems long term, when i move down my dose notice for about a week but nothing like the widthdrawl i went through before i got on the methadone. It is a long and slow process and each individual reacts differently. My doctor has been very helpful so far and I continue to come down while working and going to school. Support in nessary and have been on methadone for about 5 years.

I'm down to 3mg from 120mg and it suck's bad when you get this low (probably cause I was symptom free until 9mg but I figured I could deal with a 2 mg drop every days)if you can afford it just drop slow once you are low cause it takes a long time for the methadone to leave your system at the end for example if you are at 20 and drop to 15mgs stay on that for about a week cause the withdrawl might hit you right when you are about to drop or might be be horrible once you do (thats where I'm at) "only you know whats right for you!!!"

it's good to go 1mg or 2 at a time but once you get low like 15mg and under be prepared for anything and don't think you can handle it cause methadone with drawls are more drawn out then Heroin or OC withdrawl just be careful you don't want to use other opiates to help if you are feelin crappy cause they will add to the withdrawl in the end or your methadone treatment will be for nothin... "I really want to have a normal life and a lot of my friends are dead from the stuff OD or suicide.... The problem in titration off of methadone comes from its relative long-lasting half-life, therefore even if you are taking yourself off or having a doctor help you, the issue becomes that every dose you take within that half-life time adds back the methadone that is in your system. However, it is NOT impossible to get off of it without major trauma in terms of withdrawal symptoms IF you simply take it SLOW. The best way I have experienced as a patient with a doctor's aid was to go 5mg down every 10 days from an 80mg per day dosage UNTIL I got down to 20mg per day. From that span, then, the doctor has recommended to go slower still, maintaining a regimen of 20 for 3 weeks, then 2.5mg drop until we get to 5-10mg per day, and then take those last steps with 2.5 down to 5mg over the course of up to 6 weeks if needed, and then finally a 1mg drop off. At some point you will have to drop it altogether, and there will be some discomfort, however there are alternatives to taking an opiod that can wean you off the smaller dosages. The other bad part of methadone besides the half-life: it is a powerful drug, so even 1mg can have a lasting effect in your system that will be needed to be dropped off by dosing every other day or by another drug/holistic medication.

Stop hanging around people who use them! and slowly reduce the amount by half a pill per day.(for example: If you take 3 per day take for one week splitting it into 3 doses. morning, afternoon, evening. And the following week 2 1/2 per day 1 in morning, 1 in afternoon, and 1/2 in evening. 3rd week take 2 per day 1 in morning 1/2 in afternoon, and 1/2 in evening. keep reducing 1/2 pill per week, 3 times daily.) Do not take more one day then less next day and changing up the cycle. must be patient and stick with your goal and will feel a little tired but nothing like cold turkey. That can cause seizures. It works I did it. Find something for anxiety cause with-drawls will cause anxiousness and you will have trouble sleeping and take aleeve for pain. It helps and so does marijuana for appetite and nausea! this is coming from a nonsmoker! GOOD LUCK and stick with it! It's not easy and you need to want it for yourself!

You don't. Unlike Heroine withdrawal, coming off Methadone, especially Methadone Maintenance, can be dangerous if not tapered off gradually.....even fatal. Suboxone helps....but even that still makes for a miserable kick. Detoxing 3 to 5 mg's a day from your regular dose is the safest and most manageable way to come off Methadone.
