It can remain in place for up to 10-12 years as an effective method of birth control
If you leave the copper IUD in too long, there are no potential health problems. If you leave a hormonal IUD like Mirena in too long, you may not be protected against pregnancy, but there are no other risks.
Yes, the copper IUD can stop working after 5 years if it is one of the brands that only lasts for 5 years. If you're unsure which type of IUD you've got (e.g. whether or not it is the 5 year copper IUD) you may want to consider getting a new IUD, next time maybe consider a 10 year IUD.
I am not a doctor nor even a women, however if the IUD is ten years old, do you really think it's worth taking the risk? I would urge you contact your physician or a certified health care practitioner. Viper1
If by copper you mean a copper IUD, it depends on the brand. Copper IUD's can normally be left in the uterus from 5-10 years depending on the brand. Obviously an IUD can be removed earlier if you want to try to conceive or switch to another birth control method.
"Yes, there is a slight possibility of pregnancy when using a copper T (also referred to as a copper IUD), but it is extremely low. The copper IUD is more than 99% effective, which means less than 1 out of 100 women who use it will become pregnant each year. But the possibility of getting pregnant can be a little higher if: The IUD becomes displaced. It's not put in correctly. It's kept for more than its prescribed time (usually 10–12 years, depending on the type). If you suspect pregnancy or have some other unusual symptoms, you should visit Benecare Maternity Hospital. There is an IUD (intrauterine device) called Paraguard, which is made of copper that can provide effective birth control for up to 10 years (10 years is as long as it has been studied). As far as I know there is no birth control that lasts 12 years. Paraguard is a small "T" shaped device that is inserted into the uterus through the cervix in a small office procedure and can be removed by the physician at any time in the event that you would desire to have children. There is another IUD on the market currently, called Mirena, which is made of plastic and which releases a small amount of progesterone (a natural hormone in a woman's body). The Mirena IUD lasts up to 5 years. The IUD works by preventing ovulation (Mirena) and/or by preventing a fertilized egg from implanting into the uterus, which is necessary for a pregnancy to continue.

The concept that women who have insertion of a TCu 380A IUD at the age of 25 years or older could use this IUD as a reversible but permanent method of contraception up to the menopause continues to be supported by the accumulation of evidence, although definitive evidence remains to be obtained. The FDA has approved the Paragard for 10 years, but research shows that it is good for 12 and counting. Reputable contraceptive information sites now list it as good for twelve years. Ob/gyns are beginning to leave them in longer, in particular for women approaching menopause. Several women on the IUDiva's forum report having them in for as long as 15 years. As of January 2012, the manufacturer of the Paragard Copper T IUD recommends replacing it after ten years. Please consult your medical care provider to see what will work best for you.
Paragard is a non-hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) that is used for long-term contraception by preventing pregnancy. It works by creating an inhospitable environment for sperm, preventing fertilization. It can be effective for up to 10 years.
10 year IUD is better, it's less hormonal. The 5 year IUD makes ou gain weight because you rarely get our period with the 5 year IUD
