There is an IUD (intrauterine device) called Paraguard, which is made of copper that can provide effective Birth Control for up to 10 years (10 years is as long as it has been studied). As far as I know there is no birth control that lasts 12 years. Paraguard is a small "T" shaped device that is inserted into the uterus through the cervix in a small office procedure and can be removed by the physician at any time in the event that you would desire to have children. There is another IUD on the market currently, called Mirena, which is made of plastic and which releases a small amount of progesterone (a natural hormone in a woman's body). The Mirena IUD lasts up to 5 years. The IUD works by preventing ovulation (Mirena) and/or by preventing a fertilized egg from implanting into the uterus, which is necessary for a pregnancy to continue.
The contraceptive implant lasts three years, and the IUD lasts five or ten depending on which one you choose.
Nexplanon, Mirena, and Paragard provide birth control that lasts for years. Depo Provera provides three months of protection after each injection.
The copper IUD has no hormones, and lasts for 5-7 years. And of course there are always condoms and the sponge.
