How much amoxicillin should a child take?

This is a potent antibiotic, and therefore should be given only when prescribed by a doctor. The normal dosage for children is 10 - 20 mg per pound of body weight, but it is to be divided into three doses a day. Also, do not give with fruit juice or Carbonated Beverages because the acid in these beverages can destroy the drug. It is advisable however, to give with a small amount of food to prevent stomach upset. Most importantly though, keep in mind amoxicillin is a penicillin drug, and if your child has never taken any of the penicillin drugs, s/he needs to be monitored very closely after taking this med to be sure there are no allergic reactions, which can be fatal if not treated in time. Some of the signs to to watch for are rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, tongue and throat. If you see ANY of these signs, call 911 or take your child to the nearest emergency room immediately.
