MSIR (morphine sulfate instant release) will release rapidly (usually on the order of 10-30 minutes) whereas MS-Contin is a controlled release formulation that, unless crushed or chewed or otherwise split, will usually release over 8-12 hours. The 15 mg of MSIR would be a somewhat large dose for an opioid naive patient, a moderate dose for a moderately tolerant patient, and a small dose for a very tolerant patient, whereas the 15 mg MS-Contin is a very conservative starting dose for even opioid naive patients.

CAUTION! THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE!

MSIR is "Morphine Sulphate Instant Release" which means it instantly releases the medication. MS Contin is a Long Acting drug which means it is Time Released. You must NEVER break or chew your MS Contin as it will cause ALL of the medication to "dump" into your system at once instead of a steady stream over 8 to 12 hours. Doing this CAN and HAScontributed to death including the late Heath Ledger!

MSIR is used for "Breakthrough Pain" with people that are on long term, long acting pain medication. It is also used for people that have occasion moderate to severe pain such as cancer, Back pain, surgery, etc that have been perscribed pain medication before. MS Contin is used for people that are on long term pain medication therapy (COAT). DO NOT use MS Contin if you have not taken pain medication before unless advised by your doctor! It is NOT the same as Codeine Loratab, Percocet or even MSIR! Some drug manufacturers advise that a "Tolerance" has to exist before long action pain meds can be used.

Generic drugs DO exist for MS Contin, any drug that has "E R" at the end of its name is a LONG ACTING drug. "ER" stands for "Extended Release".

ALWAYS ask your pharmacist (it doesn't have to be your pharmacy) about ANY kind of pain medication as an error could be FATAL!

with all this being said...isnt 15 mg -15 mg?...meaning 15mg ms contin is equal to 15 mg ir. the contin is just time release and the ir isnt. ur still gettin the same amout of med. so all ur getting "dumped" is 15 mg tops(which the bio availability is only near 30 % with oral morphine. (in this case, 15 mg will b released but ur body will only use about 1/3 of that 15 mg tops, liver destroys the rest in conversion) so with the 15 mg low dose contin as far as total concern is the same as 15 mg ir in the low dosage. its when u get into your higher dose u need to b concerned with "dumping"...the rest is true and accurate. just didnt make sense to me that 15 mg contin is different than 15 ir. only difference is 1 is(contin) time release and ir isnt. being this is low dosage ,15 mg instant cant b dangerous to 15 instant. its the higher dosages that u have to take this into account right?
