While in recovery from addiction is it normal to gain a lot of weight?

It is not abnormal for those in early recovery from any addiction(s) to experience weight gain - or loss. The reduction or elimination of one's object(s) of addiction many times causes the subject to seek another way to cope with life events and/or change their emotional state(s). This is commonly referred to as "substituting" one addiction for another. Overeating is one such behavior, and can become an addiction itself. (In wealthier societies, foods are probably the most overused substances, though many do not view overeating as an addiction.) Others may try to cope and/or change their emotional state(s) by over-exercising to exhaustion - leading to malnourishment and weight loss. Still others may become addicted to sex, pornography, gambling, trying to control others, work, the internet, TV, or any other pleasurable or rewarding behavior. However, it is important to note that some addictive behaviors are not as destructive as others. For example, obesity will likely contribute to death much slower than crack cocaine. Also, gaining weight is not illegal so it is not likely to lead to trouble with the law.
