The stethoscope is used to listen to breath sounds in order to find serious lung / chest disorders. Depending on the sound it can indicate a number of illnesses. The 4 main sounds are:

Rhonchi - This basically sounds like a "snoring sound"

Rales - Described as clicking, rattling or bubbling.

Wheezing - sort of a high pitched whistling noise

Stridor - harsh vibratory sound

Rhonchi occurs when the airway is obstructed

Rales will occur when air opens up spaces that are normally closed to airflow

Wheezing can indicate an inflamed and/or narrowed airway such as bronchial tube

Stridor occurs when the trachea has a blockage

How does a doctor listen for a Heart?

Well, he most likely listens to it with a stethoscope. He places the little things at the end of the stethoscope tube in his ear and places the cold valve a little below your left nipple. If you are laying down, he might ask you to turn over to listen to your back and he might ask you to take deep breaths. Now, he is listening to your lungs to see if there are any fluids around. He may also listen to your stomach to see if there are any weird noises.
