The Vikings raided all along the coasts of Western Europe, and up navigable rivers. They especially raided England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and France, but they went as far as Constantinople. They began doing this on the coast of Northumbria at Lindisfarne in 793 and continued for another 200 years or so. In Eastern Europe, they were highly regarded as merchant traders. There weren't empires in 476 in Europe. It was complete chaos and people were raided by the Vikings and other tribes. Charlemagne had conquered most of France, but for the most part it was the Vikings invading and tribal disputes causing constant war.

The first vikings to raid England were norwegian vikings. However the first sea-raid ever from Scandinavia to western Europe was that of Hugleik from Götaland in nowadays Sweden, who raided the coast of Frisia in the Frankish kingdom already in the sixth century.
