No one can know with certainty what would have happened if the US had not annexed the Philippines. Undoubtedly, Aguinaldo and his group would have tried to establish an independent Philippine Commonwealth. Perhaps he would have succeeded and the country might have continued as a republic to this day. Perhaps the country would have become a dictatorship, as many other new independent states have, or perhaps it would have broken up into several rival states. Perhaps some European empire would have taken over all or part of the Philippines as a colonial possession or protectorate, as they were doing in Africa and southeast Asia.
