Why don't museums have all the gold and jewels buried with the rulers of ancient Egypt?

Egypt isn't allowing the export of mummies and Egyptian artifacts anymore. Unless you go to the oldest Egyptology museums (London) or Egypt itself, you're pretty much out of luck. Or if your question is where all the jewels and stuff went while the mummies were left alone, that's because of grave robbers. Ancient Egyptian grave robbers only left the mummies for us to find, and about 60 of the mummies found in the valley of the kings were moved by priests to protect them from grave robbers. Ironically, they stripped them of everything they had as payment. Even the gold on the coffins was scraped off. Which was one of the most disrespectful and despicable things to do at the time.

Why should mummies be in museums?

The display of mummies in museums is complicated. On one hand, mummies should be kept in museums because there are so few mummies left that were not looted from their tombs, and we can learn a lot about the ancient Egyptians from the mummies left behind. They are very important tools to unlocking what the Egyptians thought and believed about death, the afterlife, life on Earth, and their general religion. However, the exhibition of mummies is complicated because, even though they are precious artifacts, they are also dead bodies of real people, removed from the place of their supposed eternal rest to be gawked at in museum galleries. This practice is slightly unethical when thought of in this manner. The exhibition of human remains in museums is something that museum professionals and museum scholars continue to grapple with and argue about today, and that will continue to be an issue long into the future.

Where do mummies go on vacation?

Mummies might go on vacation to places like Egypt, where they can enjoy the warmth of the desert and explore ancient pyramids. They might also visit museums around the world to see their fellow mummies and enjoy the exhibits. Alternatively, they could take a break in a cozy tomb, soaking in the silence and history. After all, every mummy needs some time to unwind!
