Yes, today's Italians are indeed direct descendents of the Romans. The south of Italy (including Sicily), which reatins a lot of the darker features from Semitic and Greek influences, is much closer in appearance to how the ancient Romans may have looked like, as Rome was largely a melting pot of Latin, Greek and North African mixes. Proof of this can be found in remaining Southern Italian features, such as the Roman nose and smaller height. The north of Italy has more Germanic influence and is therefore less Roman in appearance.
