Prior to the territorial election of 1855, Border Ruffians from Missouri crossed into Kansas and voted a pro-slavery legislature into power. They intended to make Kansas a slave state by whatever means available.
Abolitionists like John Brown, pro slavery groups, rabble, Jayhawks, border ruffians and a wide variety of thieves, murderers and lesser criminals taking advantage of the unrest.
The dispute centered around the question of wether Kansas would be admitted to the Union as a free or slave state. Missouri "ruffians" made many raids into Kansas and numerous minor battles were fought to the point that the territory became known as "Bleeding Kansas".
