Texas was trying to make itself its own country. When they went to war with Mexico and were defeated at the Alamo, the US stepped in and later Texas was admitted. This is why Texas is called the Lonestar state. On our flag, stars represent our states and the motto is basically saying Texas is its only state. Texas was part of Mexico, and had been for a very long time. Americans were offered land if they wanted to settle in Texas as the Mexican government felt the land was underused. The conditions were that they would convert to catholics and swear an oath of alligence to the Mexican emperor. Many thousands accepted this and settled there. Once there were enough of them, they declared Texas to be independent of Mexico and, understandably, the Mexicans were not very happy. They sent an army to recover the land and The Alamo was one of the battles that were fought. Sam Houston was the Texan commander who was desperate to get the United states involved. Some say he could have rescued the Alamo defenders, his Texan army certainly had little trouble defeating the Mexican shortly afterwards, but he wanted a massacre of Americans to whip up public opinion in the states, so he allowed the Alamo defenders to die. Basicly, the USA used its military power to steal 50% of mexicos sovereign territory, are still in occupation of it and are still complaining about how many Mexicans live there LOL.
They did not want to be a state. Many of the people that went to Texas originally (when it was part of Mexico) had gone there to get away from the Federal Government of the US. So when they split from Mexico, they set up an independant country The Republic of Texas.
The subject card was used mainly in the library to categorize books in the various subjects. Before the library systems were computerized the subject card was used to help readers and learners to easily locate the books.
Texans had Texas before the U.S. got Texas and if you ask any Texan it was not the State of Texas that joined the Union but the Union that wisely joined with Texas. Before Texans had Texas it was Mexicans who lost Texas to a bunch of rambunctious and wild Texans such as Sam Huston and other Americans such as Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie and Kit Carson. Remember the Alamo? Actually Davey, Jim and Kit all died at the Alamo as that battle was lost to General Santa Ana. But that victory for Mexico ultimately became their defeat as Texans used the loss at the Alamo as a battle cry towards victory.
Capital punishment has been used in Texas since 1819. Since then 1,203 people have been legally executed. All but 6 of these people have been male. Texas is most famous for being the first state to use the electric chair, referred to as "Old Sparky". Today Texas leads the nation in executions. The execution of Cameron Todd Willingham, who many believe was innocent is an example of an executed person in Texas that is known by many throughout the country. While recipients can use their cards to purchase eligible food items at participating retailers within the state, it cannot be used in other states. However, if Texas residents travel outside the state, they may be able to use their benefits for out-of-state purchases in specific circumstances, but this is generally limited. Always check with local regulations and retailers for the most accurate information.
