Texas was trying to make itself its own country. When they went to war with Mexico and were defeated at the Alamo, the US stepped in and later Texas was admitted. This is why Texas is called the Lonestar state. On our flag, stars represent our states and the motto is basically saying Texas is its only state.
Texas was part of Mexico, and had been for a very long time.
Americans were offered land if they wanted to settle in Texas as the Mexican government felt the land was underused. The conditions were that they would convert to catholics and swear an oath of alligence to the Mexican emperor.
Many thousands accepted this and settled there. Once there were enough of them, they declared Texas to be independent of Mexico and, understandably, the Mexicans were not very happy. They sent an army to recover the land and The Alamo was one of the battles that were fought.
Sam Houston was the Texan commander who was desperate to get the United states involved. Some say he could have rescued the Alamo defenders, his Texan army certainly had little trouble defeating the Mexican shortly afterwards, but he wanted a massacre of Americans to whip up public opinion in the states, so he allowed the Alamo defenders to die.
Basicly, the USA used its military power to steal 50% of mexicos sovereign territory, are still in occupation of it and are still complaining about how many Mexicans live there LOL.

After ten years of independence Texas was still menaced by Mexico and the Commanche. Becoming a US State gave Texas added security. Also, Texas received the same rights as any US state at the time, and Texas was allowed to join the Union as a slave state.

The Republic of Texas was the only state that existed as a country before it became one of the United States. This occurred in 1845.
Texas was a state of Mexico, declared its independence, and existed as an independent republic for several years. It applied for admission to the United States as a state, which upon Congressional approval and Presidential signature, took place in 1845.
Nine years later, Texas joined the Union.
It wasn't delayed. In fact, it came faster than expected because of the gold rush. Over 10,000 people a day were coming into the territory to seek gold and in less than 2 years the population had grown enough for statehood. It became a state September 9, 1850.
Texas was an independent nation (Republic of Texas) for 10 years before it joined the Union as the State of Texas.Hawai'i was an independent nation (Kingdom of Hawai'i) for 103 years before it was annexed by the United States as the Territory of Hawaii. Hawaii was admitted to the Union as the Stat of Hawaii in 1959.
After ten years of independence Texas was still menaced by Mexico and the Commanche. Becoming a US State gave Texas added security. Also, Texas received the same rights as any US state at the time, and Texas was allowed to join the Union as a slave state.

Texas joined the Union in 1845. Here is some history about the circumstances under which it was admitted: Mexico gained independence from Spain in the 1820s and began to accept foreign settlers into the region that is today Texas. Stephan Austin led a group of Americans into the region and the Americans quickly grew to outnumber the locals. In the 1830s, the Mexican government began to try to regulate these American communities, leading to rebellion. In March 1836, Texas declared its independence, yet Texans were initially quelled by Mexican forces, notably during the fall of the Alamo. Ultimately, Texas won and decided to seek entrance into the Union. Their entrance was delayed by Congress because Texas would most likely join as a slave state. In 1844, Congress officialled annexed Texas and Texas entered the Union six months later, in 1845, as a slave state. This deepened the issues of slavery in the United States and sparked the Mexican-American War.
