They were a combination of people who were loyalist. When the war ended there were 53,000 of them who moved to Canada. You have to remember that all of the colonies saw themselves as British and they really didn't want the fight, but it came to them in many forms. The British did some very cruel things that turned many people into fighting them. Those that didn't have any exposure to the war or the cruel things probably remained loyal and these would have been mainly in cities like New York.
