Squatters were free settlers who took up farming land in colonial Australia. They sought out the new land discovered by those who explored the interior, and made improvements as they saw fit. Unfortunately, their hard work did not give them any entitlements: because they had no "legal" entitlement to their land, they could have it taken from them, no matter how successfully they had run their farms, cattle stations or sheep stations. Their land could easily be reallocated to settlers who went through formal channels to apply for land from the government.
