It was a barrier that surrounded West Berlin and kept the East Germans from crossing into West Berlin. As to physical characteristics...they varied depending on location. Everyone thinks the Wall was just these rows of big concrete slabs with pipe on top of them, and a big area with landmines, guard dogs, soldiers and machine guns between them. Parts of it looked exactly like that. Some parts had metal Fencing with vertical slats that you couldn't climb on either side of no-man's land, and some parts only had a fence on the East German side because the terrain on the other side was impassable - the part of the Wall down by the Spree River was like that.
