The battle erupted despite clear orders on the Southern side that serious engagements should be avoided. Once both armies had arrived at near-entire capacity (on July 2nd), Major General George Meade commanded some 93,000 troops on the Union side, while, on the Confederate side, General Robert E. Lee commanded just over 71,000 troops. After the battle ended, total casualties (killed, wounded, or missing) amounted to approximately 51,000 soldiers.
