First of all, if this question is referring to the American Civil-War, then there were no colonists, only Unionists and Confederates. Secondly, Native American Tribes anywhere near the eastern United States where the fighting happened lived in the Indian Territory, now known as Oklahoma. That was a land plunged in chaos, with the 5 major Indian tribes fighting the federal government, and of course being encouraged by the Confederates.

In fact, the Confederates counted the Indian Territory along with Kentucky, Missouri Western Virginia and Arizona , as part of their territory even though they had little control or influence over those areas.

If referring to the French and Indian War, then the Indians were assisting the French.
