Although he had early successes under more established conquistadors like Diego Velazquez, his main expedition to upward Florida was a complete failure, all but four survived from starvation, disease, and hostile natives. The expedition was made famous by one of the survivors, Alvar Cabeza de Vaca, who wrote a narrative describing his 8 year trek from modern day Tampa to northern Mexico.
