William Chronicle led one of the North Carolina militia groups who united to fight the Tories under Maj. Patrick Ferguson at the battle of King's Mountain on October 7, 1780. However, the overall commander for the Patriot forces was Col. William Campbell of Virginia, elected three days earlier by the other militia commanders (Isaac Shelby, John Sevier, Benjamin Cleveland, Joseph Winston, etc.) to serve as the unifying commander for that one battle. ~ Maj. Chronicle was killed at King's Mountain, and command of his troops passed to Frederick Hambright.
