There were slave quarters and they varied from fairly good to barely live able. Historians have dug up the slave quarters on Jefferson's plantation and found broken china cups and plates, so this tells us that they were treated fairly well . Often the slave quarters were single room houses with dirt floors. They often burned down because the chimney caught the house on fire, so to prevent that the chimney was designed to be pulled down away from the house when it caught fire from embers . The historians have found nails in patterns from the chimneys. Read To Be A Slave for the words and experiences of real slaves. In the 1930's a group documented the experiences of former slaves before they all died to get their stories.

Why was slave labor so important in the plantations?

Slave masters had big farms and plantations of Sugar, Cotton, Tobbaco and many more, on which they wanted people to work. Not only that but they also wanted to maximize on the profits that came out of these plantations. The only way to do this was to obtain cheap labor from somewhere and that was from the slaves. They did have to pay much to the slaves, they didn't have to feed them, they didn't have to look after their medical needs or family. All these costs withheld, there was a bit more money in the pockets of the slave masters.

Why did slave owners create difficulties for free African Americans?

At the time, plantations were staffed by slaves and the prospect of not having all of that free labor for their plantations worried the owners. They were used to having an eloquent lifestyle thanks to the hard work of the slaves and the thought of all that being taken from them was not a happy thought. They assumed that the freed slaves would cause a rebellion in their slaves and they would end up losing some of them to the underground railroad. They tried to discourage any freed slaves to come around their plantations and ran them off if they tried. Some ended up at the end of a rope and did not get to enjoy their newly gained freedom. Some ended up going to work for the white owner to manage the slaves day to day.
