I am sure Churchill regretted the loss of life and the destruction. I am also certain he regretted that the circumstances of the time forced Britain into an alliance with Soviet Russia, because Churchill had always been a stalwart anti-communist and thought that Stalin was a murderous, bank robbing thug. Churchill would also have regretted that the same circumstances placed Communist Russia on the winning side and elevated the Soviets to superpower status, even as Britain was entering into the era of the end of its Empire and decline. But Churchill had also been clear-sighted enough to see the menace in fascism and the Nazis in particular, and took great satisfaction from the ultimate defeat of the Nazis, the fascists in Italy, and the militarists in Japan. I am certain also that Churchill had regrets about certain aspects of the war in which he had a part in making decisions, where the results were not what had been hoped for, as any man of introspection and reflection in his position must when called upon to make one momentous decision after another for so many years.
