Head-hunting was a feature of certain South American tribes, notably the Jivaro group (including the Shuar tribe) of Peru and Ecuador. These native Americans collected the heads of defeated enemies and removed the skulls, dried the skins, shrank them and kept them as trophies called tsantsa.

So no, it was not in California but in the tropical rainforests of South America.
