Between the US grunt (infantryman) & and the NVA grunt (infantryman), it was probably a stand-off; the men filling the ranks of both armies consisted largely of conscripts and neither side had "no say" about the politics that controlled their lives.

The NVA were a respected foe, and gave as much as they took. They normally stood their ground...and if they did pull back...they came back, later. The US Military (Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force) just got tired of the war (or worn out).

Even though the normal tour was 12 months, some men stayed for 3 or 4 tours (two or more years); that long in the field took it's toll on a man's sanity.
