From a social and political point of view, one cannot simply pick on any group and exterminate it. The few who weren't summarily killed, and managed to escape the Nazis, and weren't handed over to the Nazis by the local populace, hid wherever they could. Some went into the forests and joined the partisans (and even there, they faced antisemitism).
