For a couple of years, the United States were the world's one and only superpower. Once Russia (or the Soviet Union at this point in history) achieved nuclear power the Cold War started up. The Cold War was basically Russia and the US pointing their bombs at each other daring the other to fire first. Nothing came out of this stand-still but during these times the threat of World War III and a nuclear war were very real.
