Englands King Charles II gave a piece of land (New York) to his younger brother the Duke of York (James). Well James was not very bright so he gives the southern piece of land away to two of his friends Sir George Carteret and Lord Berkeley. They created the colony of New Jersey. Lord Berkeley got tired of his piece of the land and sold it to the Quakers. Then it ended up being East and West New Jersey. In 1701 the colony became bankcrupt so the king took it over as a royal colony.
