The 1973 cease-fire agreement, known as the Paris Peace Accords, aimed to establish peace in Vietnam and allow for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. However, it did not adequately protect South Vietnam, as it failed to include strong guarantees for the South's security and sovereignty. After U.S. forces withdrew, North Vietnam resumed military actions, leading to the fall of Saigon in 1975 and the reunification of Vietnam under communist control. Thus, the agreement ultimately did not ensure the long-term stability or independence of South Vietnam.
UN forces remained in South Korea to guarantee the integrity of the cease fire. In South Vietnam the Coalition forces were withdrawn, and the North Vietnamese were able to mount an overwhelming invasion in breach of the treaty.

After the cease-fire, the United States continued to send military and economic aid to South Vietnam.
Nixon had been elected to begin withdrawing US troops from Vietnam and to turn over more of the fighting to the South Vietnam government. In 1972, North Vietnam finally realized that the war was a stalemate. The two sides met and arranged a cease fire. In January of 1973 the Paris Accords went into effect. The US agreed to withdraw all its troops from Vietnam in 60 days. Congress had stopped funding the war effort. The North Vietnamese government agreed to release all prisoners, which they never did. Free elections were to be held in Vietnam. The President of South Vietnam considered the agreement between North Vietnam and the US as a sell out. But it allowed President Nixon to save face and bring the soldiers home. By 1975, after US troops had been pulled out of South Vietnam, the ARVN (Army of the Republic of South Vietnam) collapsed and the North Vietnamese moved into Saigon, ending the war and finalizing the take over of the South by the North.
The US was supporting South Vietnam. The US opposed the communist North Vietnam, which was led by Ho Chi Minh. South Vietnam was ruled by President Diem (pronounced like Z-M) who was later assassinated by South Vietnam rebels. The people of South Vietnam rebelled against Diem because he was Catholic and tried to change the people's religion form Buddhism to Catholicism. Kennedy and everyone saw the pictures of the Buddhist monks setting themselves on fire and it leaked out that the US favored a coup (pronounced like coo) and the takeover by other officials led to the assassination of Diem.Kennedy also funded a CIA operation which encouraged the overthrow, and indirectly ended in Diem's assassination.
The Vietnam War officially ended in April 1975 during the Fall of Saigon. The United States withdrew in 1973, therefore leaving the South Vietnamese Army to defend the country by themselves. North Vietnam had agreed to a cease fire in 1973, and the US had to withdraw under the agreement. By late 1973, North Vietnam broke this agreement and went on to capture most of South Vietnam. In April 1975, the government of South Vietnam resigned and the NVA took control of Saigon, before the communists took control, there was a massive helicopter evacuation of Saigon.

The 1973 Vietnam War cease-fire, formalized in the Paris Peace Accords, included several key provisions: a cease-fire throughout Vietnam, the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops, and the release of prisoners of war. It also called for the political future of South Vietnam to be determined through negotiations among Vietnamese parties, allowing for the coexistence of the North and South. Additionally, the agreement aimed to ensure the respect of the territorial integrity of Vietnam and established mechanisms for monitoring the cease-fire. However, the agreement ultimately failed to bring lasting peace, leading to the continuation of conflict.
UN forces remained in South Korea to guarantee the integrity of the cease fire. In South Vietnam the Coalition forces were withdrawn, and the North Vietnamese were able to mount an overwhelming invasion in breach of the treaty.
