When did the first Soviet POWs arrived at Dachau and Why?

The date was Saturday 15th November 1941. The SS Inspectorate of Concentration Camps authorizes the postponement of the execution of Soviet prisoners of war (POWs) in Dachau and other concentration camps if SS doctors attest to their suitability for work. In light of the severe labor shortages in Germany the SS decides to alter the Commissar Order, which required the execution of Soviet political commissars and other officials. The German army turned tens of thousands of Soviet prisoners over to the SS for execution. Even though the SS drafts some Soviet prisoners for forced labor, it continues executing Soviet POWs at Dachau until September 1944. More than 6,000 Soviet POWs will be transferred to Dachau between the fall of 1941 and March 1942 and shot on the rifle range in Herbertshausen, north of the camp.

Why were the methods used by Himmler's SS effective?

Himmler’s SS employed a combination of ruthless efficiency, psychological manipulation, and systematic organization that made their methods effective. They utilized advanced technology and logistics to carry out mass exterminations and maintain control over occupied territories. The SS also leveraged propaganda to instill fear and loyalty among both their ranks and the general populace. This systematic approach, coupled with their ideological commitment to Nazi goals, enabled them to execute their plans with chilling effectiveness.

Did any British solders serve in the Waffen SS?

Yes, there where about a platoon (20 men) joined from the POWs. A handful where given the choice of fighting the Russians with the SS or staying as POWs, some choice many and I mean many laughed it off, but the original few where turned into recruiters and sent to special camps where a few POWs where housed, then the recruiters would drop hints and try and turn the soldiers against the USSR. They didn't see any action and where short lived but for a time lived like pop starts in Berlin as a propaganda tool.

Were there any good Nazis SS?

Not very many, however there may be a few, depending on your definition of "good". The SS is associated with genocide & other war crimes. After the war, few Germans were willing to admit they even served in the Waffen-SS (ground combat forces), and very few would admit they served in the SS Concentation/Death Camp guard units. The SS Camp guards were subject to being tried as war criminals, because of the genocide done there. The Waffen-SS soldiers & leaders could be prosecuted for war crimes if they participated in the killing of civilians or POWs in their custody. Many Waffen-SS units did commit these war crimes, especially on the Eastern Front. There is much more info available in books & internet.
