The renaissance in Europe spanned roughly the 14th through the 17th century. The renaissance was not in all of Europe at the same time. The English language is the language of Americans because one of the main groups of European settlers came from England. There were also large groups of French and Spanish who came, but people tend to group with others like themselves and who speak the same language. As history played out over the first couple of centuries in North America, the French and English predominated in Canada; the English predominated in the US; and the Spanish predominated in Mexico. Although there were settlers from many other places, the languages of these countries reflect the largest groups that brought these countries into existence.
