I'm not sure which stars you are referring to. Perhaps you mean what's often called the "Jewish star," which is also know as the "Star of David." It is a six-pointed star. You might also be referring to the stars that Jews had to wear during the Holocaust. These were six-pointed Stars of David. They were often yellow, depending on the time and place. Some had the word for "Jew" (in the language of the country they were in) written on the star. Jews, and those the Nazis considered to be Jews, had to attach these stars to their clothing.

No it wasn't real, but people were fleeing from Hitler at the time. Christians were taking in Jewish people all the time, and then running away from Hitler. Many Jewish people were rescued like this.

In the book "Number the Stars," Papa used the phrase "The fishing has been good at Gilleleje" to communicate to Henrik that Jewish refugees were seeking shelter with him. This was a code phrase meant to convey that the Jewish people were on their way to Henrik's location.
In chapters 11-12 of "Number the Stars," Annemarie sees German soldiers marching in the streets, stopping and questioning people, and searching houses. She also witnesses her mother helping the Rosens, a Jewish family in hiding, to escape with the help of Resistance members.
They can't because the light inside the houses masks the light of the stars. Only the stars that are brighter than the houselights can be seen.
