They were king george's army. (king george the third) The patriots fought them in many wars. The patriots won almost all their wars. However, the redcoats had an advantage of newer weapons and more soldiers.

He commanded the British troops stationed in Boston, which led to tensions with the colonial populace. The Boston Massacre was part of a massive propaganda campaign used by the Patriots to stir up the colonists into getting angry at the British. The Boston Massacre was not so much a massacre, but the accidental shooting of 5 people by British soldiers placed in Boston after the mobs of colonists were hitting the soldiers with rocks and ice. This was an effective way of getting many colonists passionate about war with England. The amount of soldiers involved in the incident is unknown.
Redcoats was another name for British soldiers because of their red uniforms.

The Redcoats thought little of the Patriots as they were considered nothing more than farmers who would be no threat to the British mission. The song - Yankee Doodle - also is considered a negative and sarcastic song that was used in reference to the Colonists. Unfortunately for the British, Colonists enjoyed the song and did not take the song negatively.
