Sputnik 1 was the first Earth-orbiting artificial satellite and launched by by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957. It was the first in a series of satellites collectively known as the Sputnik program.

In the late 1950s the Soviet Union appeared to be winning the Space Race. They launched the first earth satellite and put the first human, Yuri Gagarin, in space.
The Hubble telescope was the first telescope built by NASA and placed into orbit. The original launch for the telescope was delayed because of the disaster seen by the Challenger.
